An experienced quilter and dressmaker, Austrian-born Maggy Pavlou came to felting quite recently. She lives and works in Los Alamos, New Mexico, fusing silk and fine Merino wool to create reversible coats, jackets, vests, scarves and shawls that resemble gauzy collages, or landscapes, inspired by the Mojave and Sonora deserts. The openings and stitched ridges in her designs produce three-dimensional garments with a lightweight, flowing drape. Maggie rarely plans her designs in advance, preferring to let each one-of-a-kind piece evolve spontaneously.

Getting ready for Denver this weekend

On the first of July I will be heading to Denver for the annual Cherry Creek Art Festival sponsored by the Denver Arts Council. It is an amazing event, with 350,000 people attending over a three day period. This is the second year that I have been accepted to be in this show. About 3500 artists from all over the country apply every year, but only 234 are selected. The jury process for this show is one of the toughest because it has very sophisticated clientele. The wearable art category was added recently and this year there are only five wearable artists in the show. I am one of them.

This year I have also been selected (with a total of only 27 aritsts) to be part of a preview show at the art patrons gala event held on Thursday afternoon and evening. These artists are also given the best exhibition spots and have dinner with the invited guests.

I am looking forward to meeting a lot of people who live in Colorado and who are interested in what I am doing. I will see seeing people I have been dealing with via phone for fashion shows and various exhibits.

“Maggy Pavlou fuses fabric in alchemy of wool and water. Inside her second-story Los Alamos studio, a whisper-soft cloak of merino wool hugs a dress form, rows of holes honeycombing the hemline. The Austrian-born Pavlou turned to wearable art after leaving a longtime career in retail management. She had picked up sewing and knitting in grade school in Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, but never took either craft seriously. Three years ago, a friend gave her some hand-dyed wool roving to play with and she decided to felt it, flattening the fibers with hot, soapy water and rubbing them with her hands to prompt the scales in the wool hairs to interlock.”
